Some years ago I was teaching my 12 graders in the Kibbutz Hadati High School in Kibbutz Sde Eliyahu (co-ed), the sugya about women's exemption from time-ordered positive commands (mitzvot aseh shehazeman grama). As anyone who has learned the sugya can attest, the 'proofs" that women are indeed exempt from such commandments - supposedly learned from laws of tephillin - are very unconvincing. In an attempt to justify the exemption, one of the girls said that "girls are by nature spiritually superior, and are therefore not in need of those mitzvot".
ReplyDelete"Do you really believe that?" I asked.
She shyly smiled. "No".
"Then why do you say it?"
"A rabbi told us so."
